Question No.1-5
Raja Ampat is the newest
diving spot in Indonesia that catches world’s attention both from commercial
and scientific sides.
The Raja Ampat archipelago encompasses more
than 9.8 million acres of land and sea off the northwestern tip of Indonesia’s
West Papua Province. Located in the Coral Triangle, the heart of the world’s
coral reef biodiversity, the seas around Raja Ampat possibly hold the richest
variety of species in the world – an incredible 75% of all known coral species
are found in the surrounding seas.
Raja Ampat or “Four Kings” is the name given
to this island and comes from local myth. The four major islands found here are
Waigeo, Misool( which is home to ancient rock paintings), Salawati, and
Batanta.
The area’s massive colonies along with
relatively high sea surface temperatures, also suggest that its reefs may be
relatively resistant to threats like coral bleaching and coral disease, which
now jeopardize the survival of other coral ecosystem around the world. The Raja
Ampat islands are remote and relatively undisturbed by humans.
The high marine diversity in Raja Ampat is
strongly influenced by its position between the Indian and Pacific Oceans, as
coral and fish larvae are more easily shared between the oceans. 1,309 fish
species, 537 coral species ( a remarkable 96 % of all scleractinia recorded
from Indonesia are likely to occur in these
islands), and 699 mollusk species, the variety of marine life is
staggering. Some areas boast
enormous schools of fish and
regular sightings of sharks, such as wobbegongs.

Question

Muara
Kaman lies along the Mahakam River, in eastern Borneo. In the past the area
wasa kingdom ruled by Queen Aji Bidara Putih. She was a typical queen of myths:
beautiful, wise, and sensitive. Many princes and kings proposed to her but she
always refused them because she was more concerned with ruling her country and
guarding her people.
One
day, a Chinese boat came to eastern Borneo. First, the people thought it was a
merchantship but the boat was loaded with tradegoods and highly trained
soldiers. Their envoys brought gold and porcelain to announce the marriage
proposal from a prince of China. The queen didn’t refuse instantly and replied
that she had to ponder the proposal first. After the envoys left thepalace, the
queen called a court officer and ordered him to infiltrate the Chinese boat to
gather information on the prince.
When
night fell the officer sneaked onto the boat, got by all the guards, and finally
foundthe prince’s room. The large door would not open and he couldn’t find a
peek hole, so the officer put his ear to the wall, trying to catch sounds from
inside. He heard that the prince was having his dinner and the noise of his
chewing and slurping surprised the of_cer. It was like a boar that he had once
heard when he was hunting.
He
quickly left the boat and returned to the palace. He reported that the prince
must have
been a phantom, not a human. He believed
that the phantom could be in a human’s form only
during the daytime. The queen was so
surprised and got angry. On the next day, she refused his
proposal.
The
enraged prince ordered his troops to raid Muara Kaman. The battle was won by
the
prince’s huge band of troops. As they drew
near to the palace, Queen AjiBidaraPutih chewed aleaf of betel vine and sang a
mantra while holding it. When she threw it at the Chinese troops, it turned to
giant centipedes. The Chinese troops started to retreat but three centipedes
chased them and sank the boat. The site of the sunken ship is now known as
Danau Lipan (Lake of Centipedes), with Chinese treasures hidden on the lake’s
bed.

Tumble Wood
It was cold winter’s night when I went to
Tumble Wood. The full moon drifted in and out of the clouds, casting silvery
light on the branches. My heart pounded like a drum and my knees shook like
jelly, but I couldn’t turn back.
I ha to find the gold ring I lost at the
picnic, the ring, my grandma gave me before she died.
All around me the trees towered like
giants. The branches waved in the wind like bony fingers. Snapping branches
sounded like a thousand gunshots.
I ran as fast as a cheetah until I came to
the claearing. I got down on my hands and knees and began to search for the
ring. Then the full moon dissapeared behind the trees. The night was dark, as
dark as the deepest well. I dug deeper into the frosty earth with my bare
hands. Suddenly, I felt something soft but cold. I shone my torch at the muddy
earth.
And then I screamed, and jumped up. I
looked down at the gruesome sight. It was a hand ... a human hand.
